Tasting Note :

Weingut Wittmann is one of the most celebrated and critically admired Riesling estates in the Rheinhessen, farming biodynamically across holdings in the finest vineyard sites of the Westhofen district and producing wines that consistently represent some of Germany’s finest dry Rieslings in the Grosses Gewächs category. The Morstein is Wittmann’s most prestigious single-vineyard wine, drawn from one of the Rheinhessen’s oldest and most historically celebrated sites: a steep, south-facing vineyard of red sandstone and limestone marl above the town of Westhofen whose deep soils and excellent natural drainage produce Riesling of extraordinary concentration, mineral depth and ageing potential. James Suckling included the Wittmann Morstein GG 2022 in his Top 100 Wines of the World list at position 17, a distinction that confirms the estate’s extraordinary quality standing among German dry Riesling producers.

The 2017 Rheinhessen vintage was warm and produced wines of excellent ripeness and generous aromatic character, with the Morstein site’s deep red sandstone and limestone subsoil providing the mineral structure and natural acidity that moderates the vintage’s warmth into wines of genuine complexity and depth. In the magnum format, the 2017 Morstein GG has had the ideal conditions for slow, even development since its release, accumulating the aromatic complexity and structural integration that the finest German GG Rieslings achieve only with meaningful bottle age. The wine-searcher aggregate for the 2017 Wittmann Morstein is 96/100 across approved publications.

The combination of Wittmann’s biodynamic viticulture, the Morstein vineyard’s exceptional geological character, the 2017 vintage’s generous conditions and the magnum format’s slower development makes this one of the most age-worthy and compelling dry German Rieslings available in any format. For collectors of top-tier German Riesling who appreciate the Grosses Gewächs category’s most serious expressions, and for those who have followed Wittmann’s trajectory from an admired regional estate to one of Germany’s defining Riesling reference points, the 2017 Morstein magnum is an essential acquisition.

Pale gold with a complex nose of ripe peach, lime oil, red sandstone mineral, fresh herbs, white flowers and the distinctive petrol-mineral note beginning to emerge from the Rheinhessen limestone. Medium to full-bodied with electric natural acidity, excellent depth and a very long, dry, mineral finish of tremendous persistence. Best from 2025 through 2042.
