Domaine Michelot is a six-generation family estate in Meursault that holds the unusual distinction of having been among only four domaines in the village to estate-bottle their wines in the 1950s, when Bernard Michelot pioneered the practice alongside Comtes Lafon, Roulot and Ampeau. Now directed by Nicolas Mestre, Bernard's grandson, the estate covers 19 hectares including premier cru parcels in Les Poruzots, Les Charmes, Les Genevrieres and others, all vinified using a combination of oak barrels, ceramic tanks and egg-shaped vessels introduced progressively since 2018. The Meursault Premier Cru Poruzot is among Domaine Michelot's senior white wine offerings, drawn from the estate's holding in Les Poruzots, a premier cru noted for its earthier, more mineral and structured character relative to the rich, opulent Charmes. The 2019 Meursault vintage was exceptional across the appellation: a warm summer followed by a perfectly dry September produced wines of remarkable concentration and natural balance that are now entering their early drinking window. Nicolas Mestre's 2019 programme at the domaine included vinification in 500-litre barrels followed by six months in tank before bottling, a process that prioritises freshness and precision. The 2019 vintage in Meursault has attracted strong critical attention as one of the finest in recent memory, with William Kelley at the Wine Advocate describing the appellation's 2019 premier crus as 'fleshy and generous' with a defining combination of honeyed orchard fruit and lively structural acidity. Domaine Michelot's long history in the appellation, its early commitment to estate bottling and the evolution of the cellar under Nicolas Mestre have built a consistent reputation for honest, well-made Meursault of genuine terroir character. Drink from 2024 to 2033. Pair with poached turbot, lobster, grilled sole or a truffle omelette. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees Celsius in a large white Burgundy glass. Bright gold. The nose shows hazelnut, apricot, orange zest, white flowers and a mineral stone quality characteristic of the Poruzots site. The palate is medium-full bodied with good concentration, a creamy but structured texture and a clean, mineral and saline finish of good persistence. A well-crafted 2019 premier cru that is drinking beautifully now with several more years of development ahead. |
