Champagne Benoit Dehu is a small grower-producer based in Festigny in the Vallee de la Marne, a village whose vineyards are dominated by the Pinot Meunier variety that provides the character backbone across much of the western Marne. Benoit Dehu farms with an organic and natural philosophy, using indigenous yeast fermentations and minimal sulphur across his range. The estate is part of a generation of young Marne Valley growers reclaiming the region's potential for serious, artisanal Champagne production. The Cuvee Initiation Rose is a vintage rose from the 2021 harvest, produced using the saignee method or a blend incorporating still Pinot Meunier red wine to achieve its characteristic colour. The 2021 Champagne vintage was marked by significant spring frost damage that reduced yields dramatically, though the surviving fruit showed excellent quality, ripeness and phenolic development. Low yields concentrated fruit and intensified the characteristic flavours of the Marne Valley varieties. Festigny and the surrounding Vallee de la Marne villages have become significant sources of critically acclaimed grower Champagne, with buyers seeking out authentic, small-production wines from producers whose farming and winemaking philosophy stands in contrast to the industrial scale of the major houses. Benoit Dehu has attracted attention from specialist importers and wine media for a natural approach that extends to low dosage and minimal intervention in the cellar. Best consumed within the next two to three years. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees Celsius. An ideal aperitif or companion for charcuterie, salmon tartare or light berry desserts. Salmon pink with orange-red tints and a fine persistent mousse. Aromas of fresh red berry, rose petal, Pinot Meunier-characteristic warmth and a subtle yeasty brioche note. The palate is fresh and lively with red fruit flavour, gentle acidity and a clean, moderately persistent finish. Approachable and characterful for early drinking. |
