| Tasting Note |
Cloudy Bay is best known for shaping New Zealand’s international reputation, yet Te Wahi demonstrates the estate’s serious commitment to Pinot Noir. Produced in Central Otago, it combines precision, restraint and regional character, showcasing a distinct expression beyond the winery’s Marlborough origins. Te Wahi is sourced from the Northburn and Calvert vineyards in Bannockburn, where contrasting glacial and ancient lake-bed soils contribute structure and fragrance respectively. The cool Central Otago climate delivers slow ripening, preserving freshness while developing concentrated fruit and refined tannins. The bouquet reveals dark cherry, plum and boysenberry layered with subtle dark chocolate, crushed mint and delicate spice. The palate is vibrant and finely textured, with juicy acidity, silky tannins and restrained oak framing pure fruit. Savoury undertones and mineral persistence lead to a long, poised finish. " Supple blueberry and blackberry fruit is well at the fore on this premium Pinot, followed by far subtler dried herb, cedar and licorice notes. There's a level of round richness and concentration to the palate, a silky texture and a lovely tangy acidity. Tannins are fine grained with a sandpaper texture, supporting rather than dominating. Drink now—2031. " -- Wine Enthusiast |
