Domaine A.F. Gros is a respected family estate in Vosne-Romanée with holdings across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, producing both red and white wines from Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards in a style that combines traditional precision with the freshness and approachability of the modern generation of Côte d’Or winemaking. The Beaune 1er Cru Les Montrevenots Blanc is an unusual and intriguing wine: a white Chardonnay Premier Cru from a Côte de Beaune village more associated with its red wine Premier Crus, produced from a specific Premier Cru parcel within the extensive Beaune appellation. White wine production from Beaune Premier Cru vineyards is a minority activity but not without precedent, and the limestone and clay soils of the mid-slope Beaune vineyard zone can produce Chardonnay of considerable quality and mineral interest when farmed and vinified with the same attention that the finest Côte de Beaune white wine estates apply to their Meursault and Puligny parcels. Les Montrevenots is a Premier Cru situated on the southern side of the Beaune appellation, producing wines from well-drained limestone and clay slopes that, in white wine production, offer a style of Chardonnay somewhat distinct from the classic hazelnut-inflected opulence of Meursault or the mineral austerity of Puligny-Montrachet: typically a little rounder and more immediately accessible in youth, with good natural acidity and the citrus-mineral character of Côte de Beaune limestone without the Grand Cru depth and concentration of the most celebrated white wine appellations to the south. The 2022 vintage’s warmth will have produced a Chardonnay of excellent aromatic concentration and generous weight that should make this an immediately enjoyable expression of the Beaune blanc style. White wine from Beaune Premier Cru represents one of the most interesting and underexplored categories in Côte de Beaune white wine production, offering the collector an experience of the appellation’s mineral character without the prices or the waiting time demanded by the finest Meursault, Chassagne and Puligny Premier Crus. A.F. Gros’s reputation for quality across both colours and their rigorous approach to each vineyard holding makes this an unusually reliable expression of a proposition that many collectors have overlooked. |
