Luciano Sandrone is one of the most admired and philosophically rigorous estates in Barolo, founded in 1978 after years of grape farming and producing wines that have attracted consistent critical acclaim for their precision, elegance and the uncompromising personal vision of the producer. The Vite Talin cuvée, introduced alongside the estate’s restructured range in recent years, is a Barolo produced from the finest old vine parcels across Sandrone’s Barolo holdings, assembled to represent the fullest and most concentrated expression of the estate’s vineyard sources in each vintage. The wine’s name, ‘Talin’ in local dialect, refers to the grafting knife that symbolises the careful vineyard selection at the heart of the Sandrone philosophy. The 2014 Barolo vintage was cool and difficult, with a challenging season that reduced yields significantly across the appellation. As with the 2013, the wines from qualified producers in 2014 have proved to be more rewarding than initial scepticism suggested: their natural freshness and structural clarity reward patient cellaring and now show the kind of elegant, linear Nebbiolo character that only cool vintages reliably deliver. For Sandrone, whose winemaking approach combines traditional barrel ageing with meticulous fruit selection, the 2014’s concentration and structural tension provide excellent material for the kind of long-lived Barolo the Vite Talin is designed to be. Sandrone’s wines receive consistent and attentive reviews from all five approved publications, and the Vite Talin is among the most eagerly awaited annual releases from the Barolo appellation. The 2014, like the other cool-vintage Barolos currently on the market, appeals most to collectors who understand the Langhe tradition of patience and who are prepared to wait for the wine to reveal its full potential at a decade or more from harvest. For those who have followed Sandrone across multiple vintages, the 2014 Vite Talin is an important and revealing release from one of the finest estates in the appellation. |
