Tasting Note :

Domaine Rossignol-Trapet is a Gevrey-Chambertin estate of growing prestige, born from the marriage of two famous Burgundy families and run today by brothers Nicolas and David Rossignol. The domaine’s most celebrated holding is 1.6 hectares of Chambertin Grand Cru divided between two separate parcels planted in the 1940s and 1960s, which lie at the very centre of this 12.9-hectare appellation. Chambertin is the most celebrated Grand Cru in Gevrey-Chambertin and has historically been described by Napoleon, among others, as his personal favourite wine. The Rossignol-Trapet version is one of the most carefully produced among the appellation’s numerous small domaines.

The domaine converted to biodynamic farming from 2004, following the introduction of biodynamic practices in the Chapelle-Chambertin parcel from 1997. The 2018 growing season brought one of Burgundy’s most challenging mildew pressures in recent memory, and the Rossignol brothers managed it through an intensive and labour-intensive programme of hand-applied horsetail teas, vinifying what the domaine considers among the finest expressions of Chambertin they have produced. The 2018 wine is described as combining the ripeness and concentration that the vintage delivered with the precision and elegance that biodynamic farming tends to preserve through difficult seasons.

Critical recognition for the 2018 Rossignol-Trapet Chambertin has been strong, with the wine-searcher aggregate sitting at 96/100 for this vintage, reflecting consensus among multiple publications that the domaine achieved something exceptional in a difficult year. Decanter reviewed the 2018 Chambertin and CellarTracker community notes describe the wine at “96-98”. Multiple Burgundy observers have noted that Rossignol-Trapet is producing Chambertin at a level comparable to the appellation’s most celebrated names. The wine is distributed in very small quantities and is increasingly sought by Burgundy specialists who have noted the rapid quality ascent of this estate since the biodynamic conversion.

Deep ruby with a hauntingly complex nose of sour cherry, wild strawberry, rose petal, clove, dried herb, forest floor and a saline minerality of outstanding depth. Medium to full-bodied on the palate with silky, finely grained tannins and a long, ethereal finish of remarkable complexity and persistence. Grand Cru of the highest order; best from 2028 through 2050.
