Domaine Rossignol-Trapet was established in 1990 when the Trapet estate was divided between the next generation following the retirement of its founding families. Today managed by brothers Nicolas and David Rossignol, the estate holds Grand Cru parcels in Chambertin, Latricieres-Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin, and has farmed all vineyards biodynamically since 2004. The domaine's style emphasises balance and fruit freshness over extraction, seeking to express the terroir with fidelity rather than power. Chambertin itself spans 32.5 hectares in the heart of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation and is divided among more than twenty-five growers. Rossignol-Trapet's holding occupies parcels across the full slope of the vineyard, providing a representative cross-section of the terroir. The limestone-clay soils of Le Chambertin, sitting at the precise elevation where richness and structure combine most effectively, produce wines of exceptional concentration and longevity that are frequently considered the benchmark for the Cote de Nuits. The 2002 Burgundy vintage is widely regarded as one of the finest of the past three decades: a cool, even growing season that delayed harvest and produced wines of remarkable purity and concentration, now in an extended phase of development that could continue for several more decades. A 2002 Chambertin from a serious producer represents exactly the kind of mature, complex Burgundy that rarely appears at auction and that serious collectors seek. Rossignol-Trapet's measured extraction and biodynamic philosophy make their rendition particularly faithful to the terroir. At 23 years of age, this Chambertin is approaching its window of peak maturity; open anytime over the next ten to fifteen years. Decant for two to three hours and serve at 16 degrees. Partner with roasted squab, truffle risotto or aged Comte. Store vertically in a professional cellar if not opening immediately. Deep garnet with some brick at the rim from the ageing. A complex, evolved bouquet of dried red cherry, damp earth, forest floor, dried rose, mocha and spice emerges with great subtlety from the glass. The palate is medium-full bodied, velvet-textured and extraordinarily long, with fine integrated tannins and a finish of genuine Grand Cru depth and persistence. |
