Domaine Trapet, historically known as Trapet Pere et Fils, has been among the leading estates in Gevrey-Chambertin for generations, holding extraordinary parcels including Chambertin Grand Cru and several premiers crus. Under Jean-Louis Trapet, who has farmed biodynamically since the early 2000s, the domaine underwent a significant renaissance: the wines developed a purity, minerality and elegance that brought the estate to the top of Gevrey's quality hierarchy. The Ostrea cuvee takes its name from the Latin for oyster, referring to the fossil-bearing limestone soils in three parcels near the commune of Brochon. The 2019 Ostrea draws from three old-vine parcels including En Deree, Champerrier and Clos du Combe in Combe du Bas, selected for their particularly iron-rich, fossil-laden limestone soils and vine age. The wine is raised in demi-muids, a format that imparts gentle textural complexity without imposing new-oak character. William Kelley at the Wine Advocate awarded 92 points, noting aromas of cherries, raw cocoa and coniferous forest floor, describing it as deeper and more introverted than the domaine's regular Gevrey-Chambertin and a long-haul prospect with a layered core and long mineral finish. Neal Martin at Vinous assessed 91-93 points. The 2019 Burgundy vintage was exceptional across the Cote de Nuits, delivering wines of outstanding concentration, natural balance and the kind of deep mineral character associated with the finest recent vintages. The 2019 Ostrea, coming from the oldest vines in the Trapet estate and some of the most iron-rich limestone soils in Gevrey-Chambertin, is a wine that reflects both the quality of the vintage and the specificity of its terroir. At village level from this producer, it represents outstanding value relative to the estate's premier and grand cru bottlings. Drink from 2025 to 2038. Decant for one hour before service and pair with roast grouse, duck breast or venison with juniper. The wine is now opening and drinking well, with considerable development ahead. Deep ruby with violet hints. The nose offers dark cherry, cocoa, coniferous forest floor, tobacco and graphite with an underlying iron-mineral quality from the fossil limestone soils. The palate is medium-full bodied, more introverted and structured than the estate's village Gevrey, with layered fruit, supple tannins and a long, mineral finish. Built for cellaring. |
