The Antikythera is Antica Terra's flagship Pinot Noir, named after the ancient Greek astronomical mechanism, a small-range calculator of extraordinary sophistication discovered in an Aegean shipwreck. The wine is sourced exclusively from the rocky slopes of the northern Eola-Amity Hills, where thin volcanic soils over basalt produce Pinot Noir of a particularly mineral, structure-driven character that requires time to reveal its full complexity. Maggie Harrison's approach is Burgundian in inspiration but entirely natural in execution: the same foot treading, indigenous fermentation and minimal sulphur philosophy that defines the entire Antica Terra range. The 2022 Antikythera is described by the estate as offering 'an ebullient bouquet, marked by autumn leaves, black pepper and ink, fanning out pleasingly on the palate and cohering with each swirl of the glass, typically intense with the site's signature firm grip, succulent tannins and saline, mineral persistence.' The 2021 vintage of this wine received 97 points from Vinous (Eric Guido), who described it as 'hovers across the palate with waves of ripe wild berry fruit intertwined with saline minerals and hints of spice' and a wine of 'seamlessly silky form yet nearly weightless in feel' with 'amazing length.' The Antikythera is among Oregon's most discussed and sought-after Pinot Noirs, standing alongside Domaine Drouhin's top cuvees and the finest Eyrie Vineyards expressions as a Willamette Valley Pinot Noir of international benchmark status. The wine's distinctive Eola-Amity Hills character, combining volcanic basalt mineral intensity with Pinot Noir's aromatic delicacy, produces a wine unlike any other from the valley, and Maggie Harrison's natural winemaking philosophy amplifies rather than obscures these terroir differences. Cellar for five to eight years. Best from 2030 to 2045. Pair with roasted game bird, wild mushroom preparations or aged hard cheese. Decant two to three hours before service. Deep ruby with an ebullient, vivid character. The nose shows autumn leaves, black pepper, ink, dark cherry, saline mineral and an intense earthy note from the rocky volcanic soils. The palate is intense and firmly structured, with the site's signature firm grip and succulent tannins carrying a long, saline and mineral finish. Complex and age-worthy; patience will be generously rewarded. |
