Tasting Note :

Domaine Anne Gros is one of Vosne-Romanee's most celebrated addresses, farming 6.5 hectares across grands crus and premier crus including Richebourg, Echezeaux and Clos Vougeot. Les Barreaux is a village-level lieu-dit in Vosne-Romanee that Anne Gros herself considers of premier cru-equivalent quality, noting its proximity to both Richebourg and the legendary Cros Parantoux parcel. The site is planted with 75-year-old Pinot Fin vines at the top of the slope, on poor and shallow limestone soils that naturally restrict yields and concentrate flavour.

Decanter awarded 93 points to the 2022 Les Barreaux, describing its 'crisply refreshing high-toned fruit character, notes of peony and spice, fresh, tannic and grippy texture, and compact, expressive fruit of admirably chiselled character.' Vinous (Neal Martin) awarded 91-93, noting the wine's 'lovely raspberry and wild strawberry scents laced with oyster shells' and a 'silver bead of acidity' on a more structured palate than the appellation might suggest. Both reviewers noted the wine would reward at least three to five years of cellaring from the vintage.

Les Barreaux represents a fascinating commercial proposition within Anne Gros's range: a village-level wine from a site that the producer argues deserves premier cru status, from one of Burgundy's most sought-after estates, at a price considerably below the domaine's classified holdings. The 2022 vintage at Vosne-Romanee delivered wines of excellent concentration and balance, and the site's natural structure and the old-vine material ensure that the 2022 Les Barreaux will evolve meaningfully over the next decade.

Best from 2027 to 2038. Decant one hour before service and pair with roast duck, grouse or mushroom-based preparations. The wine is currently closed and structured; patience is required.

Deep ruby with violet highlights. Aromas of fresh cranberry, raspberry, pomegranate, peony and spice open slowly. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh, chiselled tannins, vibrant acidity and a compact, mineral-edged finish of genuine depth. The proximity of the site to Richebourg and Cros Parantoux is apparent in the wine's structure and restraint.
