Bass Phillip's Premium Pinot Noir occupies the middle tier of the estate's three-level Pinot Noir hierarchy: above the Village and below the Estate Reserve, which Jones reserves for the finest barrels and the oldest vine fruit. The Premium provides the most commercially accessible expression of Bass Phillip's Gippsland Pinot Noir philosophy, offering the estate's distinctive cool-climate character at a somewhat more approachable price than the single-vineyard Estate Reserve tier. The 2023 vintage in Gippsland brought the cool, even conditions that the maritime climate of this far southeast Victorian corner is known for, producing wines of characteristic freshness, aromatic definition and the earthy, mineral complexity that distinguishes Gippsland Pinot Noir from the warmer, richer expressions of the Mornington Peninsula or Yarra Valley. At Bass Phillip, where yields are already naturally very low and farming is attentive, the 2023's growing conditions provided excellent raw material for a wine of typical house character. Bass Phillip's Premium Pinot Noir remains among the most sought-after Australian Pinot Noirs in the mid-price tier of the estate's range, with allocation requests significantly exceeding supply. For buyers new to the estate, the Premium provides an instructive introduction to Jones's signature style: restrained, mineral, earthy and elegant, with the structure for medium-term cellaring but accessible from release with adequate aeration. Drink from 2025 to 2033. Pair with roast duck, wild mushroom risotto or mild game preparations. Decant one to two hours before service and serve at 15 degrees Celsius. Clear ruby with a translucent edge. The nose shows Bass Phillip's distinctive cool-climate Pinot Noir character: dark cherry, dried rose petal, forest floor, fine spice and a mineral thread from the Gippsland limestone soils. The palate is elegant and medium-bodied with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and a persistent, mineral-edged finish. Classic and characterful. |
