Domaine Claude Dugat's Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru includes parcels from the appellation's finest lieux-dits, with Lavaux Saint-Jacques considered among the most prestigious of the commune's twenty-six premier cru sites. The vineyard occupies a slope directly above the village, on limestone and marl soils with well-integrated clay content, producing wines of exceptional complexity and structure that many specialists consider the equal of the appellation's better-positioned grands crus. This wine is released under the main Domaine Claude Dugat label rather than the secondary La Gibryotte designation. William Kelley at the Wine Advocate assessed the 2023 Domaine Claude Dugat Premier Cru range in January 2025, awarding 91-93 points from barrel to the estate's premier cru tier. The 2023 Burgundy vintage was warm and generous across the Cote de Nuits, delivering wines of ripe, expressive fruit character and a somewhat more approachable tannic structure than the more austerely structured 2022 or 2020. Lavaux Saint-Jacques's position at the heart of the Gevrey slope ensures both depth of fruit and the characteristic earthy, mineral complexity that distinguishes premier cru Gevrey from the village tier. Domaine Claude Dugat's Lavaux Saint-Jacques consistently earns comparison with the estate's higher-classification wines given the vineyard's exceptional quality, making it one of the most sought-after premier cru releases in the Dugat allocation. For collectors who cannot secure the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, the Lavaux Saint-Jacques provides the closest alternative in terms of quality, character and the Dugat house signature of purity, low yields and meticulous vinification. Cellar for six to eight years. Best from 2031 to 2045. Pair with roast duck, game bird or truffle-based preparations. Decant two hours before service. |
