La Goujonne is a village-level parcel in Chassagne-Montrachet that Domaine Hubert Lamy has leased for over seventy years, planted with vines dating from 1950. As an appellation better known for white wines from Chardonnay, Chassagne-Montrachet rouge from a small specialist producer occupies an interesting niche: an appellation-level red Burgundy from one of the Cote de Beaune's most prestigious villages, benefiting from the excellent terroir and winemaking precision that defines Lamy's work across its range. Olivier Lamy uses 80% whole-bunch vinification for La Goujonne in 2023, a technique that contributes spice, freshness and a distinctive Loire-valley-like brightness to the aromatic profile, as noted by Neal Martin of Vinous. The wine is matured in barrel for approximately twelve months before bottling, with the proportion of new oak kept moderate to preserve fruit purity and allow the terroir character to speak. The 2023 vintage produced reds of ripe, approachable fruit and softer tannin structure across Burgundy. Neal Martin at Vinous awarded 90 points to the 2023 La Goujonne, noting the 'open and expressive bouquet with cranberry and crushed strawberry scents' and 'something a little Loire-like on the finish with black pepper on the lingering aftertaste.' This is a wine that rewards open-minded drinkers who appreciate the understated, perfumed style of a small-production red from a white wine specialist. The leasehold will reportedly end in a few vintages, making the remaining releases collector items in their own right. Drink from 2025 to 2031. Best enjoyed alongside roast duck, poultry, wild mushroom risotto or moderate cheese. Serve at 16 degrees Celsius in a Burgundy glass. Bright ruby with a translucent edge. The nose shows cranberry, crushed strawberry, rose petal, whole-bunch spice and a hint of pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, fresh acidity and a clean, detailed finish with a pleasant black pepper note at the end. Elegant and immediately appealing. |
