Domaine Joliet has been the sole owner of the Fixin Premier Cru Clos de la Perriere for over 150 years, maintaining a monopole of one of Burgundy's most historically significant vineyard sites. The 'Cuvee Camille' is named after a member of the younger Joliet generation now assuming responsibility for the estate, and represents either a specific parcel selection within the Clos or a cuvee vinified with particular attention to a younger or distinct block of vines. The domaine occupies the historic Manoir de la Perriere in Fixin, the northernmost village of the Cote de Nuits. The Clos de la Perriere was first planted by Cistercian monks from the Abbey of Citeaux in the twelfth century, a provenance that reflects the appellation's extraordinary historical depth. In the nineteenth century, the vineyard was broadly regarded as the equal of Chambertin, Musigny, Echezeaux and Bonnes Mares, the grands crus that remain among Burgundy's most celebrated sites. By some turn of administrative fate that historians still debate, it was classified as premier cru rather than grand cru at the time of Burgundy's formal classification. The 2023 vintage at Fixin was warm, producing wines of good concentration and character. Fixin as an appellation has historically underperformed its terroir potential in terms of critical attention and commercial pricing, remaining in the shadow of Gevrey-Chambertin immediately to the south. Domaine Joliet's monopole of the Clos de la Perriere is the exception: it has attracted sustained critical interest and a New York Times feature article, with Master Sommelier Sur Lucero describing the 2020 as 'one of the best Fixins I have ever tasted.' For buyers who know the terroir's quality, the Clos offers grand-cru-calibre wine at premier cru prices. Cellar for at least three to five years. Best from 2028 to 2040. Pair with duck breast, roast game bird or aged hard cheese. Decant one to two hours before service. Deep ruby with good concentration. Aromas of dark cherry, crushed stone, fresh earth and fine floral notes emerge from a focused, mineral nose. The palate is medium-full bodied with firm, well-defined tannins and a long, mineral-edged finish. The Clos de la Perriere's characteristic combination of power and mineral depth is apparent from the outset. |
