Tasting Notes

Founded in 1968, Caparzo is one of the historic estates of Montalcino and has played a significant role in elevating Brunello di Montalcino's international reputation. The estate owns vineyards across several of Montalcino's key growing zones, enabling it to produce wines with both consistency and regional character. Caparzo was also among the pioneering producers to bottle single-vineyard Brunello, recognising the importance of terroir well before vineyard-specific bottlings became commonplace.

Vigna La Casa was first produced in 1977, making it one of the earliest single-vineyard Brunellos in Montalcino. The vineyard lies near the historic Montosoli area, one of the appellation's most highly regarded sites, where well-drained galestro and limestone soils produce wines of concentration, structure and longevity. Caparzo was also among the first estates in Montalcino to incorporate French barriques into the ageing programme, while preserving the traditional character of Brunello. The 1994 vintage received a four-star rating from the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino, indicating a very good vintage with excellent ageing potential.

Now fully mature, the 1994 Vigna La Casa displays an expressive bouquet of dried cherry, black plum, liquorice, leather, tobacco, cedar, balsamic herbs and earthy truffle. The palate is full-bodied yet harmonious, with resolved tannins supporting flavours of sour cherry, dark berries, spice, dried herbs and savoury mineral notes. Mature tertiary characters of forest floor, dried flowers and cigar box add complexity, while the finish remains long, elegant and persistent.

" Described the wine as "pure dynamite", noting that it demonstrates the strength of the 1994 vintage. Richly extracted with bold fruit, firm tannins and luscious liquorice aromas and flavours, it confirms Caparzo's reputation for producing powerful, age-worthy Brunello. " -- Wine Enthusiast
