The 2003 Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape was produced from the legendary southern French heat-wave vintage, a year in which the catastrophic August temperatures produced wines of atypically ripe, generous character across the appellation. At Beaucastel, the estate's Mouvedre-heavy blend of all thirteen permitted varieties delivered a wine of unusual softness and accessibility in youth, described by Wine Enthusiast (95 points) as 'beautifully made, structured, dense, with red jelly fruits, a touch of vanilla and a fat, full-bodied but firm aftertaste.' Wine Spectator awarded 94 points, noting 'garrigue and roasted game aromas peeking out from a core of ripe black currant, plum and fig fruit' with a finish 'well-endowed with tannins that are ripe and pure.' Vinous awarded 93 and the Wine Advocate was more cautious at 90, citing the wine's 'lush, medium to full-bodied and broad' profile with 'low acidity and copious glycerin.' Now at over two decades of age, the 2003 has evolved in the direction its Mouvedre component promises: toward truffle, animal skin and leather complexity rather than the primary fruit that characterised the wine in youth. The 2003 Beaucastel occupies a distinctive position in the estate's back catalogue: a wine that divided critics at release, with some finding the heat-wave character excessive and others appreciating the vintage's generosity. Experience across now twenty-plus years of cellaring has tended to favour the latter view, with the Mouvedre providing structural backbone that anchors the wine through its evolution. At this age it should be at or approaching full maturity. Drink now through 2027. The window is narrowing. Pair with game terrine, braised oxtail or strongly flavoured aged cheese. Decant one to two hours before service. Deep garnet with brick and orange at the rim from over two decades of bottle development. Aromas of truffle, dried herbs, leather, garrigue, roasted fig and black fruit characterise the evolved bouquet. Full-bodied on the palate with integrated tannins, lower acidity typical of the vintage and a warm, lingering finish. Mature, complex and fully accessible. |
