Tasting Note :

The 2008 Trotanoy is widely regarded as one of the most remarkable wines produced in Pomerol in that difficult vintage, described by Robert Parker in his Wine Advocate as 'one of the superstars of the 2008 vintage, a wine that transcends the vintage.' Parker awarded 96 points, noting that the wine showed 'a deep purple color followed by copious amounts of red and black fruit, earth, cedar and forest floor notes, full-bodied texture, phenomenal concentration and plenty of sweet tannin.' James Suckling awarded 95, Vinous 94+.

The 2008 Bordeaux vintage was marked by difficult, wet conditions during the growing season, yet a dry and warm September allowed careful estates to produce wines of genuine quality through late-season concentration. At Trotanoy, whose deep clay soils retain moisture efficiently and whose Merlot vines have deep root systems that buffered the year's challenges, the result was a wine of 'phenomenal concentration for a 2008' in Parker's words, alongside 'plenty of sweet tannin and a terrific finish.' Neal Martin's subsequent re-tasting at Vinous yielded 94+, describing the wine as 'a multi-dimensional Trotanoy that needs another couple of years in bottle.'

The 2008 Trotanoy holds a special place in modern Pomerol history: Parker's praise for a wine from a challenging vintage, described as transcending its year, solidified Trotanoy's reputation as a producer capable of producing outstanding results even when conditions are against it. At seventeen years of age, the wine should be in its early mature drinking window while still retaining decades of development potential, exactly as Parker predicted when he stated it would benefit from several years of cellaring and would last twenty to twenty-five years.

Drink from 2024 to 2040. Decant two to three hours. Pair with roasted beef, braised lamb, truffle preparations or aged hard cheese. A wine of genuine greatness from a difficult vintage.

Deep garnet with mature brick highlights. The bouquet is profound: copious red and black fruit, mineral iron, cedar, forest floor, baking spice and a hint of truffle from bottle development. Full-bodied and muscular on the palate with the firm, sweet tannins for which Trotanoy is known, excellent acidity and a long, mineral and complex finish. A masterpiece of the 2008 vintage.
