Chateau La Grave a Pomerol is a small but distinguished estate on the western side of the Pomerol plateau, purchased by Christian Moueix in 1971 as the very first personal acquisition in what would become an extraordinary collection of Right Bank properties. Farmed with the same meticulous care applied by Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix to their flagship Pomerol estates, La Grave occupies eight hectares of predominantly gravelly soil as its name suggests, planted to Merlot and a proportion of Cabernet Franc. The vineyard sits on a continuous gravelly strip that runs across the plateau of Pomerol, connecting to the famous gravel terroirs of Cheval Blanc and Figeac. Christian Moueix has described La Grave as the equivalent of a third growth in the Medoc in terms of quality positioning within Pomerol. The 2010 Bordeaux vintage is universally acknowledged as one of the finest of the past fifty years on the Right Bank, with Wine Spectator awarding Pomerol wines a record vintage score of 98 points. La Grave benefits fully from these exceptional growing conditions, producing in 2010 a wine of rare concentration and precision. Within the Moueix portfolio, La Grave occupies the role of an accessible gateway to the house's Right Bank expertise, delivering genuine Pomerol character without the prohibitive pricing of Petrus or Trotanoy. The 2010 vintage has proven consistently age-worthy across the Moueix estate range, and bottles at this level are now approaching their mature drinking window while retaining significant further potential. Open with confidence from 2024 to 2035. Decant one to two hours and pair with roast beef, duck breast, or rich mushroom-based preparations. The wine has the structure to continue developing for another decade in a properly maintained cellar. Deep garnet with mature brick tints. Aromas of ripe black plum, black cherry, cedar, crushed stone and a hint of truffle emerge from the glass with some time. The palate is medium-full bodied, rounded and smooth with silky tannins, Merlot's characteristic plushness and a long, refined finish. At fifteen years, approaching its drinking sweet spot. |
