Tasting Note :

Chateau La Providence is a historic Pomerol estate with an unusually significant place in collector history: the 2012 vintage was the final release ever produced under this label. Christian Moueix, who purchased the property in 2005 after the estate had operated under the 'Petite Eglise' name in recent years, produced Pomerol from the ten-acre estate on the plateau until 2012, when the decision was made to cease production, making the entire back catalogue a finite and closed collection. Approximately 1,200 cases were produced in a typical vintage.

The Wine Advocate awarded 92 points to the 2012 La Providence, Wine Spectator 92 and Wine Enthusiast 93. The wine is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, fermented in concrete eggs and aged in 50% new French oak for twelve to eighteen months. The 2012 Pomerol vintage was moderate, with the wine described as 'classy' by Neal Martin at Vinous, noting it was 'light on its feet with an attractive salty tang on the finish...a Pomerol not seeking attention.' James Suckling awarded 92-93 at en primeur, finding 'a wonderful core of fruit and polished tannins.'

The finality of the 2012 La Providence as the last vintage ever produced from this estate transforms it from a straightforwardly good Pomerol into a collector's document. No future vintage will exist; the estate's vines are now part of other Moueix holdings. For buyers who appreciate the concept of a closed historical chapter in Bordeaux, the 2012 represents an opportunity to acquire the final expression of a Pomerol terroir farmed to exacting Moueix standards, now permanently retired from production.

Drink now through 2030. Decant one to two hours before service. Pair with duck breast, beef medallions or mature cheese. At thirteen years of age the wine should be in its mature drinking window.

Deep garnet with mature hues. The bouquet shows the Moueix-Pomerol signature: ripe black cherry, plum, cedar, tobacco and a fine clay-mineral note from the plateau soils. The palate is medium to full-bodied, light on its feet for Pomerol, with fine tannins, a salty mineral quality and a long, polished finish. Subtle and refined: a final vintage that went out with class.
