Chateau Lagrange is a small Pomerol estate of six hectares farmed by the Etablissements Jean-Pierre Moueix, wholly distinct from the far larger Saint-Julien third growth Chateau Lagrange owned by Suntory. The Pomerol Lagrange occupies a sector of the plateau planted to 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc on the characteristic gravelly clay soils that define the appellation's finest wines. Production is small, and the wine circulates primarily through the Moueix allocation network. The 2012 Pomerol vintage was moderate in scope, requiring careful selection to produce wines of character from a wet and uneven growing season. The Moueix family's decades of experience managing Right Bank clay terroirs informed a careful approach to the 2012 at Lagrange, producing a wine that reflects both the terroir's consistent character and the vintage's inherent freshness. Moueix properties in Pomerol consistently outperformed the vintage's broader reputation through meticulous viticulture and strict selection. Chateau Lagrange Pomerol has never attracted the international profile of its Moueix stablemates Trotanoy or Hosanna, but within the Pomerol collector community it is appreciated as a reliable, authentic expression of the plateau terroir at a more accessible price point. Its small production and Moueix-guaranteed provenance give it credibility among buyers who value house style and farming consistency over label prestige. Drink now through 2028. Pair with roast duck, beef preparations or aged farmhouse cheese. Decant one hour before service and serve at 16 degrees Celsius. Mature garnet-ruby. The nose shows classic Pomerol character: plum, black cherry, clay mineral, truffle and a subtle cedary note from barrel ageing. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannins, good acidity and a clean, moderately persistent finish. Honest and authentic Pomerol from a reliable small Moueix estate. |
