Tasting Note :

Chateau Rocheyron was established in 2010 as a joint venture between Peter Sisseck, the Danish winemaker famous for creating Pingus in Ribera del Duero, and Silvio Denz, the Swiss parfumeur and owner of Peby Faugeres. Their eight-hectare estate in Saint-Emilion grows on some of the appellation's most prized limestone soils, farmed organically and biodynamically from the outset. The 2012 was the second vintage of the estate and the first to receive significant critical recognition.

The Wine Advocate (Neal Martin) awarded 91 points to the 2012, praising its 'complex nose much more developed than the 2011 with ebullient red cherry, wild strawberry, minerals and crushed rose petals' and noting a palate with 'fine tannin, better structure, with a pinch of white pepper and sea salt on the finish.' Wine Spectator awarded 92 points, noting 'impressive depth for the vintage, with good cut for balance.' Decanter awarded 92 points, describing 'mineral and fresh, focused summer fruits with gentle black spices and touches of cocoa.' The blend was 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

The 2012 Saint-Emilion vintage was challenging, marked by wet and uneven conditions that required strict selection, but Sisseck specifically noted that improvements made in the vineyard between 2010 and 2012 were reflected in the wine's quality. The estate's limestone terroir and the combination of Sisseck's Ribera del Duero-influenced precision with Bordeaux fruit produced a wine of notable refinement for a second vintage. Rocheyron has since gone on to become one of Saint-Emilion's most talked-about emerging properties.

Drink from 2020 to 2030. Decant for one to two hours before service and pair with roast duck, beef preparations or aged hard cheese. At thirteen years of age the wine should be approaching its mature drinking window.

Deep ruby with some mature evolution. Red cherry, wild strawberry, minerals, crushed rose petal and fine Merlot warmth on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, well-integrated tannins, good acidity and a mineral, saline finish with white pepper and sea salt. The limestone terroir of Rocheyron is clearly expressed; elegant and refined.
