The 2012 Hosanna is among the most celebrated wines Robert Parker ever reviewed in a re-tasting, receiving 97 points in April 2015 as part of an unprecedented second assessment of the 2012 Bordeaux vintage that ignited 'an unprecedented sales bonanza' according to wine merchants present at the time. Parker described the wine as 'close to perfection, this extraordinary blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc seems to have hit all the high notes in 2012. Inky ruby/purple with stunning concentration, a multidimensional mouthfeel, skyscraper-like texture and fabulous purity of blue, red and black fruits. Aromatically, this may be the most profound wine of the vintage.' Hosanna was created in 1999 when Christian Moueix acquired the finest parcels of the former Certan-Giraud estate, 4.5 hectares planted on exceptional gravel-clay Pomerol soils south of Lafleur and west of Petrus. Vinous (Antonio Galloni) awarded 94, James Suckling 93, Decanter and Wine Spectator each 92. In magnum format, the wine develops more slowly, extending the cellaring window and amplifying the presentation value of what Parker called 'aromatically the most profound wine of the vintage.' The 2012 Hosanna's extraordinary Wine Advocate score in a vintage not universally acclaimed represents one of the most dramatic single-wine stories in modern Bordeaux: an estate and a year that combined to produce a wine far exceeding expectations, driven by the specific combination of Hosanna's exceptional clay-gravel terroir and the year's conditions. In magnum, the wine is preserved in a format that will outlast virtually every standard bottle of the same wine in collector cellars. Best from 2025 to 2040 and beyond in magnum. Decant three to four hours. Pair with roasted prime rib, truffle preparations or aged hard cheese. One of the greatest magnums of modern Pomerol. Inky ruby-purple with exceptional density. The bouquet is stunning: blue and black fruits, violets, truffles, espresso roast and a chalky mineral precision that feels more like the finest limestone-plateau Saint-Emilion than typical Pomerol. Full-bodied on the palate with skyscraper-like texture, multidimensional mouthfeel and a finish of extraordinary persistence. A monument of the vintage. |
