Conterno Fantino was established in 1982 through the partnership of Claudio Conterno and Guido Fantino. Based in Monforte d'Alba, the estate has become one of Barolo's benchmark producers, combining meticulous vineyard work with a refined, modern interpretation of Nebbiolo. The organically farmed estate owns parcels in some of Barolo's most celebrated crus, including Ginestra, Mosconi, Castelletto and Bussia. Their wines are known for balancing concentration, aromatic purity and ageing potential. Vigna del Gris is a 1.8-hectare parcel within the renowned Ginestra cru of Monforte d'Alba. Its loose, well-drained calcareous soils consistently produce one of the estate's most elegant and perfumed Barolos. The warm, dry 2017 growing season yielded lower production but concentrated fruit, while the site's elevation and limestone-rich soils helped preserve freshness and aromatic lift. Approximately 9,082 bottles were produced. Compared with the estate's Sorì Ginestra, Vigna del Gris is typically more floral and refined. The 2017 offers aromas of rose petals, orange zest, wild strawberry, red cherry, dried herbs and sweet spice. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with vibrant acidity, firm yet polished tannins and impressive precision. Although the warm vintage gives the wine additional richness, it retains the lifted, elegant character for which Vigna del Gris is known. " Intensely perfumed with rose petals, orange zest, ripe strawberry and cherry. Full-bodied with layered fruit, dusty tannins and excellent length. Recommended from 2025 onwards. " -- James Suckling " Noted the wine's delicate, finely woven aromatics and elegant personality despite the warmth of the vintage, suggesting even greater complexity with extended bottle age. " -- Wine Advocate " Bright, focused and taut with floral, spice and mineral notes. Galloni praised its freshness, balance and classic expression of the Gris vineyard. " -- Vinous
