Castello di Fonterutoli, owned by the Mazzei family, is one of Tuscany's oldest and most prestigious wine estates. The family's winemaking history dates back to 1435, spanning more than 25 generations. Located in Castellina in Chianti, the estate has been instrumental in the evolution of Chianti Classico and is recognised for combining centuries-old tradition with modern viticulture and precision winemaking. Introduced in 1981, Concerto was among the first Super Tuscan wines to blend Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon, helping redefine the potential of Tuscan fine wine. The grapes are sourced from selected estate vineyards with galestro and alberese soils at elevations between 350 and 570 metres, where significant diurnal temperature variation preserves freshness and aromatic complexity. The 2019 growing season is regarded by the estate as one of the finest in decades, producing wines of exceptional balance, concentration and longevity. The 2019 Concerto is a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The two varieties are vinified separately before ageing for 18 months in French oak—Sangiovese primarily in tonneaux and Cabernet Sauvignon in barriques—followed by extended bottle ageing prior to release. Deep ruby in colour, the wine opens with aromas of black cherry, cassis, blackberry and plum, complemented by violet, Mediterranean herbs, cedar, graphite, tobacco and sweet baking spices. The palate is full-bodied yet remarkably poised, with concentrated dark fruit, refined tannins and vibrant acidity. Sangiovese contributes freshness, elegance and savoury complexity, while Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure, depth and longevity. The finish is long, mineral and beautifully balanced. " A profound and important Tuscan red... abundant black fruit, spice, firm tannins and vibrant acidity. The 2019 offers greater depth, intensity and ageing potential than the preceding vintage." -- Wine Advocate, Monica Larner Vinous (Antonio Galloni) " A vibrant and impeccably balanced wine with expressive dark fruit, floral lift, polished tannins and exceptional energy. Elegant, layered and built for long-term cellaring. " -- Vinous " Rich aromas of blackberry, violet and cedar lead into a concentrated palate with silky tannins, freshness and impressive precision, finishing with outstanding persistence.
