Tommaso Bussola is one of the iconic names of the Valpolicella Classico region. Since taking over the family estate in the late 1970s, Bussola has become renowned for producing wines that combine the traditional richness of Amarone with remarkable elegance and freshness. Through meticulous vineyard management, low yields and careful grape selection, the estate has earned a reputation as one of the benchmark producers in Veneto. The vineyards are located in the hills around Negrar, where limestone and volcanic soils, together with excellent sun exposure, provide ideal conditions for growing Corvina and other native varieties. The estate follows the traditional appassimento method, drying grapes for several months before fermentation to concentrate flavour and structure. The 2020 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is produced from a traditional blend of Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella. After harvest, the grapes are naturally dried before fermentation, then matured in oak to develop complexity. " The 2020 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico wafts up with a rich blend of cherry sauce and dusty sage, elevated by nuances of cocoa and split pine. It is soothingly round yet lifted in feel, with crisp red berry fruits offset by a bitter tinge of dark chocolate. The finish is structured and long yet fresh, leaving tart wild berry notes and lingering clove spice." -- Vinous, Eric Guido " A rich, dark wine with ripe cherries, raspberries, cocoa powder and subtle black pepper on the nose. Full-bodied, dense and velvety with thick tannins and toasty flavours. Crisp acidity carries the wine through a finish of almonds and marzipan. Drink or hold." -- James Suckling |
