Tasting Note :

The 2021 Roc des Cambes is Francois Mitjavile's expression of a year that particularly suited the Cotes de Bourg terroir's clay-limestone soils, producing wines of notable aromatic purity and Burgundy-like delineation. William Kelley at the Wine Advocate awarded 92, describing the wine as 'wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet berries, wild plums, rich cassis, pipe tobacco and espresso roast, medium to full-bodied, fleshy and textural, an especially elegant rendition of this superb clay-limestone terroir.' Neal Martin at Vinous assessed 91 for the bottled wine, finding 'another quite Burgundy-like bouquet, a melange of red and black fruit, very well defined, perfumed and pure.'

The 2021 Cotes de Bourg vintage benefited from the appellation's slightly cooler, more clay-influenced conditions relative to the higher right bank appellations, producing wines of natural freshness and precision that complement Mitjavile's approach well. Neal Martin noted that he found the 2021 vintage particularly well suited to Roc des Cambes, observing 'an uncommon sense of rondeur for a 2021 and pliant, filigreed tannins on the finish,' describing it as 'a wonderful wine.'

For buyers assembling a vertical of Roc des Cambes, the 2021 and 2022 offer an instructive comparison of two contrasting vintages from Mitjavile's Cotes de Bourg estate: the 2021 more perfumed, Burgundian and linear, the 2022 broader, more structured and chalky. Both demonstrate the estate's capacity for distinctive, age-worthy red wine at a price point genuinely below its quality level.

Drink from 2026 to 2037. Decant one to two hours before service. Pair with roasted lamb, dark mushroom preparations or strong aged cheese.

Deep ruby with purple tints. The nose shows sweet red and black berries, wild plums, pipe tobacco and espresso roast, with a Burgundy-like purity and finesse. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a fleshy texture, pliant tannins and a focused, elegant finish. A wonderfully refined and precise expression of the Mitjavile style in a vintage that suited this terroir especially well.
