Chateau Beaucastel is the signature estate of the Perrin family and one of the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation's longest-established great names, farming 130 hectares biodynamically across some of the most diverse and ancient terroir in the southern Rhone. The estate is unique in utilising all thirteen grape varieties permitted in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape AOC in its red wine blend, with Mourvèdre playing a significantly larger role than at any other estate in the appellation. The 2022 blend comprises 30% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache, 10% Counoise and a balance of further varieties including a substantial 20% white grape component. The 2022 vintage was warm and sun-kissed in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, producing wines of ripe, generous fruit character. At Beaucastel, winemaking has evolved under the younger generation of Perrins, with Cesar Perrin actively reducing Syrah in favour of Counoise to improve freshness. The Wine Advocate (Yohan Castaing) awarded 94 points, Vinous 94. This 375 ml half bottle carries the same wine and same vintage scores as the standard 750 ml bottling. Chateau Beaucastel's blend philosophy and Mourvèdre concentration give its wines a distinctively different character from most Chateauneuf-du-Pape: earthier, more savoury and less immediately fruit-forward in youth, the wines build complexity over ten to twenty years in the bottle. Beaucastel is consistently considered alongside Clos des Papes and Chateau Rayas as one of the appellation's indispensable benchmark estates. Drink from 2026 to 2035 in half bottle format. Pair with roasted Provencal lamb, wild boar or strong aged cheese. The half bottle format is well suited to restaurant service and intimate occasions. Deep ruby. Aromas of dark wild berries, dark cherries, spices and licorice with a touch of chocolate. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate with a structured, textured mid-palate enhanced by velvety tannins, peppery freshness and a long, delicate finish. Dense and well-balanced; a classic Beaucastel in need of a few more years. |
