Domaine Xavier Monnot is one of the leading estates in Meursault, Burgundy. The domaine has been in the Monnot family for generations and was formerly known as Domaine René Monnier. In 2005, Xavier Monnot took over full responsibility for viticulture and winemaking, introducing significant improvements in both the vineyards and cellar while renaming the estate under his own name. The estate comprises approximately 17 hectares (42 acres) stretching from Beaune to Maranges, with an impressive portfolio of Premier Cru vineyards in Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, Volnay, Pommard and Beaune. Xavier Monnot's philosophy is to produce wines that express purity of fruit, elegance and terroir, using sustainable vineyard practices, low yields and restrained oak ageing. Clos des Chênes is among the most prestigious Premier Cru vineyards in Volnay. Located on the southern hillside of the appellation, its shallow limestone soils and excellent south-facing exposure consistently produce Pinot Noir with remarkable perfume, silky texture and mineral precision. Compared with many other Volnay Premier Crus, Clos des Chênes combines the appellation's signature elegance with greater depth, structure and ageing potential. Vinification: Hand-harvested fruit, traditional fermentation and maturation for approximately 12–14 months in French oak barrels, around 30–35% of which are new. Style: Refined and aromatic, offering floral lift, vibrant red fruits, silky tannins and a pronounced limestone-driven mineral backbone. The wine combines finesse with enough concentration to reward extended cellaring. " Bright purple, lovely aromatics, waves of fine quality fruit, violets and liquorice, sensual at the back, no dry patch, and a very long finish. This will be the star of the pack here." -- Inside Burgundy, Jasper Morris " Lovely, finely delineated bouquet with wilted rose petals, cranberry and raspberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, vibrant red fruit and a liberal sprinkling of black pepper on the finish, displaying excellent balance and precision. " -- Vinous, Neal Martin |
