Bodegas Remelluri is one of Rioja's most historic and influential estates, located in Labastida in Rioja Alavesa. The estate traces its origins to the 14th century when Hieronymite monks cultivated vines around the Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri. In the modern era, the estate was revitalised by Jaime Rodríguez Salís before renowned winemaker Telmo Rodríguez helped establish Remelluri as a benchmark for estate-grown Rioja. Remelluri pioneered the concept of a true single-estate Rioja, inspired by the château model of Bordeaux, producing wines exclusively from its own vineyards. The vineyards, farmed organically, lie on limestone-rich slopes between 550 and 800 metres above sea level, contributing freshness, structure and complexity to the wines. The 2008 Reserva is historically significant as it was the final vintage to include a small proportion of purchased fruit, before the estate moved entirely to estate-grown grapes from 2009 onwards. The 2008 Remelluri Reserva is a traditional yet refined Rioja Reserva, produced predominantly from Tempranillo with Garnacha, Graciano and small amounts of white varieties including Viura and Malvasía. The wine was matured for approximately 17 months in oak barrels of varying sizes and ages before extended bottle ageing. The style is elegant rather than powerful, emphasising freshness, savoury complexity and terroir expression. Mature aromas of blackberry, red cherry, balsamic herbs, tobacco, dried flowers, smoke and spice are supported by fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity, giving the wine excellent balance and ageing potential. " Well-defined aromas of blackberry leaf, mint, bay leaf and balsamic. Medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp acidity and a lovely finish marked by smoke, dried herbs and black pepper. A serious, structured Rioja with excellent ageing potential. Drink 2014–2024. " -- Wine Advocate, Neal Martin " Highly perfumed with aromas of redcurrant, cherry, rose pastille and spicecake. Silky and penetrating on the palate, featuring expressive red fruit, slow-building tannins and impressive finishing freshness and length. Built to reward extended cellaring. " -- Vinous |
