Adrien Dhondt's Chétillons de Haut is the most consistently acclaimed cuvee in his personal negociant project, drawing from a mid-slope, east-facing lieu-dit in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger where extremely thin topsoil over chalk and the presence of court-noue (fanleaf virus) restrict yields and concentrate flavour. The Wine Advocate awarded 95 points to the 2020 vintage from Kristaps Karklins, describing it as 'flamboyant' and 'the most immediately expressive of the three wines this year.' The 2021 is the fourth vintage of this cuvee. The court-noue virus affecting the Chétillons de Haut parcel, as in certain Burgundy grand cru sites, reduces individual vine yields dramatically while concentrating the remaining fruit into wines of unusual intensity and textural richness. The 2021 growing season's frost damage further reduced yields across the Cote des Blancs, amplifying the concentration that the site already delivers naturally. Adrien Dhondt vinifies in barrel with approximately one-third new wood and disgorges at approximately one gram per litre dosage. The comparison between the Les Plantes d'Oger and the Chétillons de Haut from the same producer, vintage and vinification is instructive: where Les Plantes d'Oger expresses the broader Le Mesnil Grand Cru character in a more linear, focused register, the Chétillons de Haut consistently shows more richness, flamboyance and immediate expressive complexity from its virus-affected concentration. Both are produced in micro-quantities and are among the most sought-after new-release wines from the Cote des Blancs. Cellar for three to five years. Best from 2028 to 2040. Pair with grilled sole, lobster, fine oysters or white truffle risotto. Serve at 11 degrees in a broad white wine glass. Bright pale gold with fine energy. The nose is flamboyant and immediately expressive: dried white flowers, sweet citrus, smoke and a distinctive chalky mineral note. The palate is layered and deep, more generous and textured than the Les Plantes d'Oger, with ripe fruit, tangy acidity and a precise, mineral finish of considerable persistence. Both accessible and structured for further development. |
