J.L. Vergnon is a small, quality-focused grower-producer situated in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, widely regarded as the most prestigious Grand Cru village for Blanc de Blancs Champagne in the Côte des Blancs. The estate was founded by Jean-Louis Vergnon and has evolved, under the stewardship of his son Christophe, into one of the most admired small producers in the appellation for the purity and precision of its Chardonnay-only cuvées. The domaine farms its vineyards in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger as well as in the neighbouring Grand Cru villages of Avize and Oger, and vinifies with an emphasis on natural acidity, minimal intervention and the kind of mineral transparency that only the finest Côte des Blancs terroir can reliably deliver. The Eloquence is Vergnon’s Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs, sourced from the estate’s Grand Cru holdings across Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize and Oger, and assembled from a base vintage supplemented by approximately 20% reserve wines from previous years. It is aged for a minimum of 36 months on the lees before disgorgement and released with a dosage of 3 grams per litre, the very low end of the Extra Brut classification. This combination of extended lees contact, high-quality Grand Cru terroir and minimal dosage produces a Champagne of great austerity, mineral precision and age-worthiness that is quite different in character from the more immediately accessible style of the major houses. James Suckling awarded the Eloquence 93 points, describing it as one of the finest examples at this quality level from the Côte des Blancs. The wine sits within the grower Champagne movement’s most serious register: a wine of terroir rather than house style, produced in limited quantity and distributed through a small network of specialist retailers who serve collectors seeking genuine Blanc de Blancs identity from a Grand Cru source. For those who have not yet encountered Vergnon’s work, the Eloquence is the estate’s ideal introduction. |
