Castello Pomino is Frescobaldi's property within the tiny Pomino DOC, a small zone in the Arno valley east of Florence at elevations between 600 and 800 metres. The Frescobaldi family has farmed here for over three centuries, and the Pomino DOC itself was created in 1983 largely around the estate's boundaries. Vinsanto is among the estate's oldest traditions and one of the most labour-intensive wines produced anywhere in Tuscany. The 2018 Pomino Vinsanto is produced from Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasia Bianca Toscana and San Colombano, the grapes air-dried on racks for several months before pressing. The wine then ferments slowly and ages for seven years in small wooden barrels, known as caratelli, developing its characteristic amber colour and concentrated aromatics. The 375 ml format is standard for Vinsanto, reflecting both the wine's richness and the small quantities produced. Pomino DOC Vinsanto holds a particular distinction in Italian dessert wine: unlike many Tuscan Vinsanti, the presence of Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco in the Pomino DOC regulations historically allowed Frescobaldi to produce a style of notable freshness alongside the expected concentration. The 2018 vintage at Pomino was characterised by alternating rain and sunshine that produced excellent aromatic complexity in the drying fruit. A classic meditation wine. Pair with dry biscuits such as cantucci, amaretti, panettone or aged Gorgonzola. Serve lightly chilled at around 12 degrees in a small-bowled glass. Capable of ageing for a further decade or more due to residual sugar and the protective character of the extended wood ageing. Brilliant amber with golden highlights. The bouquet opens with dried apricot, sultana, candied orange peel and walnut, followed by notes of nutmeg, star anise and coffee bean. The palate is rich and concentrated but balanced by a tangy acidity; the finish is clean, very long and carries a dry, slightly oxidative warmth. |
