Damijan Podversic is one of the most influential producers in Italy's natural wine movement and a leading figure in the revival of traditional skin-contact white wines in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Based in Oslavia, near Gorizia on the Slovenian border, Damijan was mentored by the legendary Joško Gravner and has become renowned for producing profound, age-worthy orange wines that express the unique Ponca soils—a mix of marl and sandstone—of the Collio hills. The estate farms approximately 10 hectares of organically managed vineyards planted with indigenous varieties including Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana and Friulano. In the cellar, Damijan follows a traditional, low-intervention philosophy: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, prolonged skin maceration, ageing in large Slavonian oak casks, no fining or filtration, and only minimal sulphur additions. Ribolla Gialla is considered the estate's flagship wine and one of the benchmark expressions of the variety. The 2018 vintage is produced from 100% Ribolla Gialla grown on Ponca soils. The grapes are hand-harvested before fermenting with indigenous yeasts in large oak vats, remaining on their skins for approximately 60–90 days. The wine is then aged for around three years in large oak casks, followed by one year in bottle before release. Deep amber-gold in colour, the wine combines the concentration of an orange wine with remarkable freshness and precision. Aromas of dried apricot, orange peel, quince, chamomile, Mediterranean herbs and honey are complemented by notes of tea leaf, crushed stone and subtle spice. The palate is full-bodied and textural, with fine phenolic tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, savoury, mineral finish. Despite its richness, the wine remains poised and exceptionally food-friendly.
