Domaine Rousseaux-Batteux is a small grower-producer based in Verzenay, one of the Montagne de Reims' most celebrated Grand Cru villages, planted almost exclusively with Pinot Noir. Le Moulin (The Windmill) is a reference to the Moulin de Verzenay, the famous nineteenth-century windmill that stands among the vines of the village and serves as the appellation's most visible landmark. A 'Verzenay Blanc' from Pinot Noir is produced as a blanc de noirs, either as a still Coteaux Champenois or as a sparkling Champagne. The 2020 growing season in Champagne was broadly excellent, benefiting from warm dry conditions that produced wines of ripe fruit and good natural balance. For Verzenay Grand Cru Pinot Noir, the vintage's generosity is amplified by the terroir's naturally mineral, structured character, producing wines of notable richness alongside the village's characteristic iron-mineral backbone. Pressed as a blanc de noirs, the Pinot Noir juice produces a pale white wine with the structure and weight that the variety's thick skins impart without the colour. Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs from Verzenay, whether still or sparkling, occupies a niche of particular specialist interest. Verzenay's Pinot Noir is considered among the finest raw material in the Montagne de Reims, producing wines of structure and ageing potential that distinguish them from the lighter Grand Cru expressions of the Cote des Blancs. For buyers interested in exploring the full expressive range of the Champagne region's Grand Cru sites in a still wine format, this is an instructive and genuine expression. Drink now through 2027. Serve at 12 degrees in a broad white wine glass. Pair with grilled fish, poultry or mild cheese preparations. Pale gold with a fine colour depth. The nose shows white stone fruit, a fine mineral note from the Verzenay chalk and Pinot Noir's characteristic broad, structured warmth. The palate is medium-bodied with good weight and fresh acidity, finishing with a mineral, clean persistence. A rare and instructive still Blanc de Noirs from a celebrated Grand Cru site. |
