Adrien Dhondt's personal negociant project explores single-parcel terroirs across the southern Cote des Blancs, working with small plots in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and applying the same precision and barrel-fermentation approach he uses at Champagne Dhondt-Grellet. Les Plantes d'Oger is a specific lieu-dit within the Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Grand Cru, vinified separately to document the character of this particular site within the village's mosaic of varying slope positions and soil depths. The 2021 is the fourth vintage of Dhondt's eponymous project. Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Grand Cru is one of Champagne's most celebrated white wine terroirs, producing Chardonnay of extraordinary mineral tension, salinity and longevity from the village's distinctive chalk and thin topsoil combination. Les Plantes d'Oger occupies a specific position within this terroir, producing a Chardonnay expression that reflects both the Grand Cru's overall character and the particular characteristics of this site. The 2021 growing season in Champagne was marked by spring frost that severely reduced yields, concentrating what fruit remained into wines of notable depth. The Wine Advocate's William Kelley and Kristaps Karklins have consistently reviewed Adrien Dhondt's single-parcel Mesnil wines, awarding scores in the low-to-mid nineties for the 2018 through 2020 vintages. The 2021's low-yield character, driven by the frost, suggests a wine of concentrated character consistent with the pattern established across the previous vintages. Very small production volumes make these wines almost exclusively accessible through specialist allocation channels. Cellar for two to four years for optimal development. Best from 2027 to 2038. Pair with grilled turbot, lobster bisque, white truffle preparations or aged goat's cheese. Serve at 11 degrees in a broad white wine glass. Pale gold with a crystalline clarity. The nose opens with citrus zest, white blossom, chalk and the distinctive saline mineral quality of Le Mesnil Grand Cru. The palate is precise and medium-bodied with tension, vibrant acidity and a long, mineral finish. A faithful expression of the Les Plantes d'Oger site from this meticulous small-production negociant. |
