Tasting Note :

This is the magnum presentation of Bass Phillip's 2021 Premium Chardonnay, the same wine as the standard bottle bottling from this highly allocated and sought-after Gippsland Chardonnay range. The 2021 vintage at Bass Phillip was characterised by the cool, precise, linear conditions that Gippsland delivers in its more restrained years: wines of fine acidity, mineral definition and natural freshness rather than the richer, more generous character of the warmer 2022. In magnum, the wine's development is slowed, extending its cellaring potential and providing a more generous pour for dining occasions.

Bass Phillip's Premium Chardonnay magnum is one of the rarest formats available from this already-limited producer. Phillip Jones's total production is modest, and the fraction of each vintage presented in magnums is a fraction of that. For collectors who are fortunate enough to secure these bottles, the magnum format represents an insurance policy against the wine's relatively fast evolution in standard bottles, providing an extended window of optimal drinking.

The 2021 vintage's cool, precise character suits Bass Phillip's house style particularly well: Jones's minimal-intervention approach, biodynamic-leaning farming and restrained oak usage are most eloquently expressed in vintages where the natural acidity and mineral character of the Gippsland terroir dominate over warmth and richness. The magnum provides a slightly more restrained, slower-evolving expression of an already refined vintage.

Best from 2026 to 2037 in magnum. Pair with fine oysters, grilled langoustines, poached turbot or mild aged cheese. Serve at 12 degrees Celsius.

Pale gold with fine mineral clarity. The 2021's characteristic precision shows in a restrained nose of citrus oil, green apple, chalk and white flower with a fine smoky mineral note. The palate is elegant and focused rather than broad, with electric acidity and a long, precise finish. More linear than the 2022; the magnum format will reward a further two to three years of cellaring.
