Grattamacco is one of the founding estates of the Bolgheri appellation and is widely regarded as one of Tuscany's finest producers. Established in 1977, it was the second winery ever founded in Bolgheri, following Sassicaia, and has played a pivotal role in establishing the region's international reputation. The estate is situated on a hillside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea near Castagneto Carducci, where cooling maritime breezes and mineral-rich soils create ideal conditions for both red and white varieties. The estate is organically farmed, with vineyards planted on white clay, sandstone and calcareous flysch soils. Grattamacco's Vermentino comes from some of Bolgheri's oldest Vermentino vineyards, including vines approaching 40 years of age. The combination of mature vines, coastal influence and careful vineyard management produces a distinctive expression of Vermentino that balances Mediterranean richness with freshness and mineral precision. The 2021 Bolgheri Vermentino is made from 100% Vermentino. Approximately one-third of the wine is fermented in French oak barriques, with the remainder vinified in stainless steel. It is then aged for six months on its fine lees, with regular bâtonnage to enhance texture and complexity while preserving freshness. The 2021 vintage is noted for its outstanding balance between aromatic richness and vibrant salinity. The bouquet reveals white peach, citrus blossom, broom flower, grapefruit, Mediterranean herbs and subtle spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and beautifully textured, combining ripe orchard fruit with lively acidity, pronounced saline minerality and a persistent, chalky finish. The wine is both immediately appealing and capable of developing further complexity over several years. " A sleek white, with elements of ripe peach and melon blending with Mediterranean scrub, bitter citrus and crushed stone. Vibrant and also leaves a chalky feel on the extended finish." -- Wine Advocate " Fresh and aromatic with notes of lemon peel, white flowers, Mediterranean herbs and wet stones. Medium-bodied with bright acidity, attractive texture and a long, mineral finish. " -- James Suckling |
