Livio Felluga is widely credited with modernising the wines of Friuli, moving to the region in the late 1930s and replanting vineyards on the hills of Rosazzo. The estate, still run by the founder's family, farms around 370 hectares across the Collio and Colli Orientali del Friuli and is considered the benchmark producer for the region's indigenous white varieties. Friulano, the grape known until 2007 as Tocai Friulano, is the signature white of Friuli. The name change followed a European Union ruling in favour of Hungary's Tokaj appellation, though the variety itself has no genetic link to Tokay. In the Colli Orientali del Friuli, marl and calcareous soils yield Friulano of notable texture and a distinctive bitter almond edge on the finish that sets it apart from other Italian whites. The 2021 vintage across Friuli was marked by a cool, even growing season that delivered wines of particular freshness and definition. Livio Felluga's Friulano is stainless-steel vinified to preserve the grape's aromatics and natural acidity, and is bottled with a screwcap for optimal freshness. The wine occupies a reliable commercial tier in the estate's range, offering consistent quality and strong varietal character at an approachable price. Pair with affettati misti, seafood risotto, fried mixed fish or Frico. Best consumed within two to three years of the vintage, though the 2021's freshness gives it comfortable holding through to 2026. Straw yellow with pale green tints. The nose is clean and precise, with peach, white almond blossom and lemon zest over a characteristic mineral base. The palate is medium-bodied and smooth with lively acidity, good fruit definition and a signature bitter almond note on the dry, clean finish. |
