La Croix de Brully is a boutique Burgundy producer specialising in small-production wines from the Côte de Beaune. The estate focuses on expressing individual vineyard sites through low-intervention winemaking, careful vineyard management and restrained use of oak. Production is deliberately limited, allowing meticulous selection of fruit and a strong emphasis on terroir. Its Saint-Aubin 1er Cru La Châtenière comes from one of the appellation's finest Premier Cru climats. Situated on the steep eastern slopes above the village of Saint-Aubin, La Châtenière enjoys a south-east to south-facing exposure and shallow limestone-rich soils that consistently produce Chardonnays combining concentration with pronounced mineral tension. In recent years, this vineyard has become one of Saint-Aubin's most sought-after sites, producing wines that rival neighbouring Chassagne-Montrachet for complexity while retaining the freshness and precision characteristic of Saint-Aubin. Produced from 100% Chardonnay, the 2022 La Châtenière reflects the warm yet balanced 2022 Burgundy vintage. Fermentation and maturation are carried out in French oak barrels, with only a modest proportion of new oak, allowing the vineyard's mineral character to remain at the forefront. The wine displays a pale golden colour with aromas of white peach, ripe pear, lemon zest and citrus blossom, complemented by notes of toasted hazelnut, flint, fresh butter and crushed limestone. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a creamy yet vibrant texture, supported by lively acidity and pronounced chalky minerality. Layers of orchard fruit, citrus and subtle spice lead to a long, saline finish. Although approachable in its youth, the wine has the balance and structure to develop further complexity over the next decade. " Unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, crisp yellow orchard fruit, toasted hazelnuts and buttery pastry... medium to full-bodied, with a fleshy and layered core of fruit girdled by racy acids, concluding with a long, chalky finish. " -- Wine Advocate " Pretty and layered aromas of pear and apple compote with citrus zest and spice. Stony, delicious and intense medium-weight flavours deliver fine length on a balanced, clean and dry finale." -- Burghound, Allen Meadows |
