The Hilt Estate Chardonnay is the entry point into the estate's white wine range, drawing fruit from across the Rancho Salsipuedes property including portions of both the Bentrock and Radian Vineyard blocks alongside other estate parcels. Where the single-vineyard Bentrock Chardonnay presents a specific and precise site expression, the Estate blend provides a more generously accessible introduction to The Hilt's style: the same maritime-driven freshness and mineral character but in a slightly rounder, less site-specific format suited to earlier drinking. The Santa Rita Hills AVA's cool, fog-influenced climate consistently produces Chardonnay of natural freshness and mineral precision, and The Hilt's estate vineyards, farmed with rigorous attention to low yields and canopy management on poor diatomite and loam soils, provide exceptional raw material at the Estate classification level. Matt Dees applies similar winemaking principles across the range: native yeasts, restrained new oak and a focus on allowing the cool-climate fruit to express itself without excessive winemaking intervention. The Hilt Estate Chardonnay occupies a compelling commercial position as the most accessible wine in a portfolio that culminates in single-vineyard expressions capable of rivalling the finest white Burgundy. For buyers who appreciate the estate's overall philosophy and want to experience the Santa Rita Hills maritime character at a lower price point than the flagships, the Estate provides exactly that entry point. The 2022 vintage's warmth adds a welcome degree of richness to the Estate's naturally cool-climate profile. Drink from 2024 to 2030. Pair with grilled fish, light chicken preparations, asparagus or mild white cheese. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees Celsius. Bright pale gold. The nose shows the Santa Rita Hills maritime character: citrus blossom, nectarine, lemon cream and a fine mineral salinity from the diatomite soils. The palate is medium-bodied and well-balanced with good acidity and a clean, refreshing finish. An honest and well-crafted estate Chardonnay from a prestigious address. |
