The white wine of Clos des Papes is produced in even smaller quantities than the red, from six different grape varieties in equal proportions: Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Piquepoul and Picardan. Vinified entirely in stainless steel without malolactic fermentation, the wine is designed to preserve freshness and mineral clarity, developing significant complexity with bottle age without the weight that oak ageing would impose. In youth it shows primary citrus and floral character; with time it evolves toward remarkable mineral and honeyed complexity. The 2024 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc received 96 points from the Wine Advocate (Yohan Castaing), who described it as 'exquisite, wafting from the glass with aromas of flowers, herbs, almonds, pear and peach,' with 'terrific mid-palate plenitude and a long, ethereal, somewhat chalky finish lifted by a beautiful bitterness and a saline aftertaste.' Decanter's Matt Walls awarded a remarkable 98 points, noting the wine's mineral saline finish and advising that while 'good now, it will be better from 2029.' Vinous awarded 93. Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc from Clos des Papes is among the most sought-after white wines in the southern Rhone, with annual production far below the already-limited output of the red wine. The equal-proportion six-variety blend is unique in the appellation and reflects Paul-Vincent Avril's conviction that the whole of the white varieties permitted in Chateauneuf is greater than any individual part. Bottles rarely appear on the secondary market and are almost exclusively sold through allocation. Best from 2029 to 2048 per Decanter. Currently approachable but will reward patience dramatically. Serve at 12 to 14 degrees in a large white wine glass. Pair with lobster, grilled turbot, white truffle risotto or aged goat's cheese. Pale gold with green tints. The nose shows limeflower, fennel, almond, grapefruit citrus bitters and a fine mineral-saline quality of remarkable precision. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, round and sappy with a lively core of fruit, excellent mid-palate plenitude and a long, ethereal, chalky finish with a distinctive mineral bitterness. Tight and brilliant. |
