Tasting Note :

Francçois Mitjavile’s Le Tertre Roteboeuf is one of Saint-Émilion’s most singular and fiercely independent estates. Mitjavile, who took over the property in 1978, has deliberately withdrawn from the Saint-Émilion classification system and sells exclusively direct to importers, bypassing the négociant trade entirely. The result is an estate that commands prices rivalling Premiers Grands Crus Clas sés on quality alone, without the benefit of official rank.

The 5.7-hectare vineyard sits on the clay-limestone slopes of Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, a few kilometres southeast of the Saint-Émilion plateau. Four clay types resting on a limestone bed create what Mitjavile describes as “cold soil”, enabling very late harvesting of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. The 1992 vintage was among the more challenging Bordeaux harvests of the 1990s, a cool and wet season that demanded patience and strict selection in the vineyard to achieve any meaningful ripeness.

Tertre Roteboeuf’s standing in the collector market owes everything to the consistency and individuality of its wines rather than to formal classification. The estate’s raisin-like lusciousness and perfectly concentrated fruit style has attracted a dedicated following since the pivotal 1985 vintage. Old magnums from this property are increasingly scarce, and the 1992, from a season that tested every producer in Bordeaux, represents an interesting archival document of Mitjavile’s unwavering commitment to late harvesting.

A garnet core with brick and amber evolution signals three decades of bottle age. Aromas of dried cherry, tobacco, fig and earthy forest floor emerge, with hints of liquorice and leather. The palate shows softened tannins, a savoury mid-palate and tertiary notes of truffle, the magnum format having provided a measured and even pace of development.
