Tasting Note :

Domaine Huet, historically bottled as Domaine le Haut Lieu, is the defining estate of Vouvray and one of the Loire Valley's most significant producers of any style. Founded by Gaston Huet in 1928 and biodynamically farmed since 1990, the domaine owns three Grand Cru-calibre vineyards on the Premiere Cote: Le Haut-Lieu, Le Mont and Clos du Bourg. Gaston Huet considered the Clos du Bourg the greatest vineyard in Vouvray, and its sweet wine Premiere Trie selections are among the most sought-after Chenin Blanc in the world.

The Premiere Trie designation identifies a selective harvest pass through the vineyard, collecting only the most concentrated, botrytis-affected berries at peak noble rot intensity. The 'Essai' suffix distinguishes an even rarer micro-cuvee, vinified separately from the most exceptional individual pressings within the selection, produced only when the vintage conditions justify it. The 2005 vintage was outstanding for concentrated Loire sweet wines, providing ideal botrytis development balanced by the Clos du Bourg's innate acidity. This is effectively one of the rarest and most historically significant expressions that the estate can produce.

Among serious collectors of French sweet wine, Huet's Moelleux Premiere Trie selections from the Clos du Bourg are considered equivalents in importance to the finest Sauternes and the legendary Coteaux du Layon Grand Crus. An 'Essai' cuvee appears only in truly exceptional years and in micro-quantities, making market appearances a relatively infrequent event. The combination of the vineyard's limestone soils, the Chenin Blanc variety's natural acidity and the estate's biodynamic philosophy produces sweet wines of extraordinary longevity, documented in some cases across half a century.

Cellar this wine for as long as patience allows. While magnificent now, the Clos du Bourg's natural acidity ensures decades of development remain ahead. Pair with Roquefort, foie gras terrine or ripe stone-fruit desserts such as peach tarte Tatin. Serve lightly chilled rather than cold to allow full aromatic expression.

Deep golden amber. Intensely aromatic, with honeyed apricot, candied orange peel, saffron, preserved lemon and a distinctive mineral-chalk note from the limestone subsoil. The palate is rich and concentrated yet never cloying, with the Clos du Bourg's signature acidity drawing the sweetness into sharp, vivid focus; the finish is extraordinarily persistent and complex.
