The 2021 Château d'Issan Blason d'Issan is the second wine of Château d'Issan, a Troisième Grand Cru Classé in the Cantenac commune of Margaux. Under Cruse family stewardship, the estate produces wines of consistent aromatic refinement and characteristic Margaux elegance. This cuvée draws from younger vines on the estate, aged 14 to 16 months in barrel, one third of which are new oak. The d'Issan vineyards in Cantenac sit on deep gravel over clay subsoil, providing strong drainage and natural warmth through the growing season. The 2021 vintage was demanding: spring frosts cut yields across Bordeaux and an unsettled summer required close attention in the vineyard. Late September warmth rescued the harvest, yielding a Merlot-dominant blend of 52% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot. Second wines from classified Margaux estates carry genuine appellation character at considerably lower prices than the grand vin. Blason d'Issan has built a consistent record across recent vintages, reflecting estate identity without demanding extended cellaring. For enthusiasts exploring Margaux at an accessible price point, or collectors building across multiple levels, it provides a credible and estate-authentic entry into d'Issan. |
