Domaine Henri Magnien et Fils is a Gevrey-Chambertin estate whose quality has been significantly elevated since Charles Magnien, Henri’s grandson, took over winemaking responsibilities in 2009. The domaine’s most important holding is a 1.48-hectare parcel of Les Cazetiers Premier Cru, one of the most highly regarded sites in Gevrey-Chambertin, situated immediately adjacent to the celebrated Clos Saint-Jacques on the village’s northern side. Charles Magnien has focused on reducing yields, improving vine health and reducing new oak usage to allow the terroir of this exceptional site to express itself with greater clarity and precision than the domaine achieved in earlier generations. Les Cazetiers is a 9.1-hectare Premier Cru on the eastern flank of the hillside above Gevrey-Chambertin, whose clay-limestone soils and steep easterly exposure produce Pinot Noir of distinctive saline mineral character and impressive structural depth. The vineyard has been documented in records dating to 1656, and its proximity to the Premier Cru Clos Saint-Jacques, whose wines command Grand Cru prices, gives some indication of the site’s potential. The 2021 Burgundy vintage was defined by the frost events of early spring that reduced yields significantly across the Côte de Nuits, with the resulting wines achieving exceptional concentration and aromatic purity in the finest estates. Vinous awarded the 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers from Domaine Henri Magnien a range score of 93 to 95 points in barrel assessment, describing a wine of “compelling bouquet with black plum, quince and crushed limestone scents” that shows “real panache” and “a seductive and persistent finish.” The estate’s Cazetiers has consistently been identified by specialists as the most impressive wine in the range, and the 2021 vintage’s combination of low yields and excellent growing conditions makes this a particularly significant release for collectors who follow Gevrey-Chambertin with serious attention. |
