Cantina Terlano (Kellerei Terlan) was founded in 1893 in the village of Terlano in South Tyrol and is widely regarded as Italy's finest white wine cooperative. With 143 member growers cultivating approximately 165 hectares of mountain vineyard, the cellar is renowned internationally for white wines of exceptional longevity and precision. Winemaker Rudi Kofler applies the same exacting standards to the estate's indigenous red programme as to its flagship white blends. Lagrein is the indigenous red grape of Alto Adige, believed to have originated in the South Tyrol and produced with conviction nowhere else in Italy. The variety thrives on the sandy loam and subvolcanic soils of the Terlano zone, producing deeply coloured wines with characteristic dark fruit, violet and a distinctive bitter structure. The 2021 vintage in Alto Adige was shaped by spring frost events and an attentive summer requiring close canopy management, but rewarded careful growers with wines of notable freshness and definition. While Terlano's international reputation rests on Pinot Bianco and the Terlaner white blends, the estate's indigenous reds attract genuine interest from buyers focused on uncommon Italian varieties. Lagrein is one of the country's most singular red grapes, and very few producers achieve the quality level Terlano consistently delivers. For collectors seeking a regionally distinctive, food-friendly red from one of Italy's most reliably excellent producers, this is an instructive and satisfying choice. Pair with South Tyrolean sausages, venison, or braised beef short rib. The wine benefits from a forty-five minute decant to soften the tannin and open the fruit, and will evolve comfortably for a further four to six years in the cellar. Deep, near-opaque ruby-violet. Aromas of dark cherry, blueberry and mulberry are entwined with violet, bitter chocolate and a characteristic earthy, resinous note typical of the variety. The palate is full and round, with soft but present tannins, good natural acidity and a finish that carries spice and dark fruit at length. |
