La Rogerie, the Champagne venture of Francois Petit and Justine Boxler, produces two distinct expressions from the Le Bourg Sud vineyard in Avize Grand Cru. Where the Reserve Perpetuelle draws on a perpetual reserve blended across multiple vintages since 2018, the NV21 is a single-vintage-dominant bottling based on the 2021 harvest, expressing the particular character of that year rather than a house continuity blend. The NV21 designation transparently communicates the dominant base vintage while preserving the regulatory flexibility of a non-vintage classification. Avize Grand Cru Chardonnay in 2021 exhibited notable freshness and precision, a characteristic of the cooler conditions across the Cote des Blancs that year, producing wines with more tension and linearity than the broader, richer 2018 or 2019 base releases. The wine is bottled at extra-brut dosage, consistent with the estate's emphasis on site purity and mineral transparency. The NV21 format, which communicates the base vintage directly to the buyer, has become increasingly popular among grower Champagne estates seeking to offer vintage specificity without the additional lees-ageing requirements of a full vintage declaration. La Rogerie's approach reflects a commitment to honesty about harvest character and provenance, appealing to the same specialist buyer community that has embraced other growers in the Cote des Blancs. Limited production ensures this is primarily an allocation-based purchase. Well suited to raw oysters, white fish ceviche or poached lobster. The linearity of the 2021 base gives this wine a focused, appetising quality that makes it a natural aperitif or first-course companion. Cellaring for two to three years should bring further integration. Bright straw gold with a delicate, sustained mousse. Aromas of lemon curd, green apple, oyster shell and subtle brioche lead to a precise, saline palate with bright acidity, a creamy mid-section and a long, chalk-driven mineral finish of admirable clarity. |
