Tasting Notes :

Château Haut-Bergey is a historic Cru Classé estate located in Léognan, within the prestigious Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux. The estate traces its origins to the 15th century but entered a new era after its acquisition by the Garcin family in 1991. Significant investment in vineyard restoration and cellar modernisation transformed Haut-Bergey into one of the appellation's leading value estates. The vineyards are planted on the classic deep gravel soils of Pessac-Léognan over clay and limestone, providing ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The estate has adopted organic farming practices, with a focus on expressing the distinctive smoky, mineral character that defines the region.

The 2009 Château Haut-Bergey is a classic Left Bank Bordeaux blend, composed of just over 50% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance predominantly Merlot. Produced in one of Bordeaux's finest modern vintages, the wine is full-bodied, richly concentrated and matured in French oak for approximately 16 months. The warm, dry growing season delivered exceptional fruit ripeness while preserving freshness, resulting in a wine of generous fruit, polished tannins and excellent ageing potential.

Deep ruby-purple in colour, the wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, ripe blackberry, dark cherry and plum, layered with graphite, cedar, cigar box and smoky charcoal. Hints of dark chocolate, espresso, pencil lead and sweet spice emerge with aeration. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, showing generous cassis and black fruit supported by silky, ripe tannins and vibrant acidity. The signature smoky minerality of Pessac-Léognan carries through to a long, refined finish with notes of cocoa, tobacco and crushed stone. Now entering its prime drinking window, the wine combines youthful fruit with developing tertiary complexity and should continue to evolve gracefully over the next decade.

"A blend of just over 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Merlot, the opaque ruby/purple-colored 2009 reveals notes of scorched earth, burning embers, charcoal, black currants, ripe cherries and lead pencil shavings. Full-bodied and pure with sweet tannin, this is an under-the-radar, high-quality claret to drink over the next 20–25 years." -- Robert M. Parker Jr
