Founded in 1957 by Giuseppe Cencioni, Capanna is one of the pioneering estates of Montalcino and remains under the stewardship of the Cencioni family. Situated on the celebrated Montosoli hill in the northern part of the appellation, the estate is renowned for producing elegant, long-lived Brunello di Montalcino. Alongside its acclaimed reds, Capanna is one of the few historic producers preserving the tradition of Moscadello di Montalcino, one of Tuscany's oldest wine styles. The estate combines traditional vineyard practices with meticulous cellar work, producing wines that reflect the distinctive limestone-rich soils and cool northern exposures of Montosoli. Moscadello di Montalcino Vendemmia Tardiva is a late-harvest sweet white wine made from 100% Moscato Bianco sourced from old, sparsely clustered massal selections. The grapes are harvested late to achieve high natural sugar concentration before undergoing a short skin maceration and cool fermentation in stainless steel. The wine is then matured in 5–10 hl oak barrels for approximately 18 months, followed by 12–18 months of bottle ageing, creating a dessert wine that balances richness with vibrant acidity and remarkable ageing potential. The 2018 vintage displays a deep golden-amber colour with an intensely aromatic bouquet of acacia honey, candied apricot, ripe pear and candied citrus peel, complemented by hints of nutmeg, sweet spice and white pepper. Rich and luscious on the palate, it delivers concentrated flavours of dried stone fruits, honey and caramelised citrus, supported by lively acidity that keeps the sweetness fresh and balanced. Layers of spice and mineral complexity emerge on the persistent finish, leaving a harmonious impression of elegance and depth. It pairs beautifully with almond biscuits, blue cheeses, mature hard cheeses or foie gras. |
